The art of weaving
The Weaver by Diego RiveraA little coincidence this week has brought weaving and art together.
In the cold days of late winter visitors to the studio are always welcome and we were very happy to welcome a Canadian visitor this week. Our guest works in a yarn store in Canada and is travelling the world looking at textile traditions. (Shetland seems to figure high on the list of favourite places!) We got chatting and discussion turned to the craft of weave in Mexico. How about these for colours in Zapotec tapete? It was a great visit with lots of stimulation and inspiration. I hope we see you again, Ms N.
This morning, a random search for pictures of weavers in fine art brought up the Mexican painter and muralist, Diego Rivera, and this beautiful picture, property and courtesy of the Art Institute of Chicago of "The Weaver". Isn't it beautiful, giving grace, poise and dignity to an ancient craft.
