Weavers we know...Mary Penny
When we were very young, Mary Penny came to Yell and spent some time weaving some beautiful blankets out of lambswool. Here is an update about Mary and what she has been up to since.
"I finished my degree with a BA first class hons in textile design. I achieved a high grade mainly because of the blanket collection I made for my final show. One of these was made when I was in the Shetland Islands.
I then did a 2 year MA in textile design at the Royal College of Art. During this time I won scholarships from the Laura Ashley Foundation and the Worshipful Company of Weavers. Please see link with an explanation of the work I did whilst at the RCA. Link
I also has my thesis published which you can now find on Amazon. Link
Since leaving education I came to work full time for Johnstons of Elgin as a woven textile designer. Johnstons is a wholesale and retail manufacturer of fine woollens and cashmeres with a factory based in Elgin. I now work at the Johsntons of Elgin Hub office in London where I design home and fashion accessories for our own wholesale collection which sells worldwide and also for our branded customers eg. Mulberry, Hackett. www.johnstonscashmere.com
Along side this my own collection of blankets sell through Theo-Thorsten Van Elten. Link
My blog has photos of my work. www.marypennytextiles.com. If you click on the main photograph it will take you to a photobucket account with lots of pics of my work."
Fantastic work, Mary! Thanks for sending us news.
