Violeta went to heaven

This film about the life and loves of the Chilean folksinger/ textile artist, Violete Parra, came out in 2011 but I have only recently made its and the artist's acquaintance. The film itself is a little disorienting to watch because it mixes reality documentary reality with magic realism and it flips between decades in the artist's life, but it is full of wonderful music and worth it just for that.

Violete was born in Chile and spent her early performing career in a travelling musical troupe before moving to Europe and showing her works in the Louvre. Violete returned to Chile where she became increasingly isolated and ended her own life in 1967, but her legacy lives on in her songs that reflect the vibrant and mysterious soul of the South American country.
