Passenger to Teheran

I am reading a fascinating account by Vita Sackville-West, of writing and gardening fame, about her journey through what was then Persia, modern-day Iran.

Vita writes in her beautifully lucid style, full of wonder and delight at the scenes that surround her and I love her description of the carpet weavers, a description whose "loveliness endures as a melody in the mind" to quote a memorable line. She speaks about the music of the land, the colours of the landscape and the people she meets with love and care and affection. Altogether it is a deglithful book and one that I thoroughly recommend to anyone who likes reading and travelling.

The book is called Passenger to Teheran and is published by HarperPerennial.
