Weaving hats

Also on the BBC is an enchanting short film about the weaving of hats from pandanus on one of the Pacific islands: Rurutu.

The weaving of these hats, called taupoo on this French Polynesian island, was brought in by missionaries in the 1800's and fast became the fashionable item to wear to church. Nowadays the hats are given as gifts too, but the tradition is dying out.

This lovely film centres on the skills of Mama who transforms the pandanus, dried and dyed, into one of her special hats. It is a work of art, both in the weaving and in each step of the process.

If you are in the UK you can see the film on iPlayer. If not, try looking for the series Handmade in the Pacific: Taupoo.
