Strandbeests
Theo Janesen started to create his unique creatures in the early 1990s in an attempt to make wind-powered ceatures that would help fight rising seas.
Each year Theo sits down to create the next iteration, learning from the previous attempts, and each year they bring him closer to realising his idea: to make a beach-dwelling machine that will move sand to shore up failling sea defences. The old machines are recycled or made into fossils and sold, and the new ones operate over the summer, roaming at will on a beach near Scheveningen where the artist lives. Since the machines were last on the blog they have evolved and now they fly, as you can see on this page.
