Shetland and Orkney - neighbours in tweed
More work in the archives in Lerwick has turned up a collaborative effort between the islands of Shetland and Orkney.
Shetland & Orkney Weavers was established in 1947, according to my research, and had premises in Lerwick and other parts of Shetland. There is not much information about the company so if anyone has anything to tell us about Andrew Stewart Ltd I would be very grateful. It would be really interesting and rather wonderful if that story could be told, wouldn't it?
Orkney, by the middle of the last century, apparently had far fewer weavers remaining than Shetland did. I do not know why but I suspect that it may have to do with the fame of Shetland wool. Did that fame lead to the demise of weaving in our neighbouring archipelago? If you can answer that question, please get in touch and let us know.
