Shetland textiles 2015
It is officially summer! Now is the time to get out and about and see all the textile-y things that are going on in our islands.
For the next couple of weeks, the Shetland College Degree Show is open at Gremista. We were lucky enough to be able to get to the opening last night, and I can truly say that there is some very beautiful and sophisticated work. Get along if you can to see the show in the College's premises in Lerwick, and see what a variety of techniques and ideas has come from students. Congratulations everyone. An impressive and grown-up show.
And talking of sophistication, get along to the Shetland Textile Museum where you can see the new show - Makers' Choice: items chosen by Shetland knitters. We got a look-in a couple of weeks ago on our textile tour and some of my favourite pieces from the collection are on display, from Fair Isle to lace. It is a great overview of the history of knitting in these islands.
Two things I have not managed to get to yet - Fraser Taylor's work in the Bonhoga Gallery which opened last night too, and the tattit rugs exhibition in the Museum in Lerwick. Both treats to be savoured another time.
