Researching Shetland tweed

We have just started a new project which will be looking for and at the traditions of Shetland tweed.

Shetland has a long and varied tradition of tweed manufacture, both industrial and small-scale, and we have realised over the past few years that there are collections of tweed and woven fabrics across Shetland which would be very interesting to see. So we are on a mission! Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, we are starting a project to find out where there are woven fabrics in Shetland and to record them with photographs and stories. We eventually want to end up with a website and a book of the tweeds. Isn't that exciting!

To help us we are looking for someone with weave or textiles experience who wants a part-time contract to do some research, help us put up an exhibition and prepare the website and publication. If you are interested, please email for details

If you know anyone who was involved in the weave industry or who still weaves, or if you have some fabrics in your attic and are willing to let us know about them and photograph or draw them, please get in touch. We would love to hear from you.
