Serizawa - Master of Japanese Textile Design

The Royal Museum, now part of the National Museum of Scotland, showed the first European exhibition of Serizawa's work in 25 years with pieces selected by his son for the UK national celebration of Japan 2001.

The catalogue from the exhibition is now in the collection at the studio. Filled with images of designs, hangings, kimono, book illustrations and paintings it is a joy to read. It shows the tremendous energy and talent of Serizawa Keisuke, one of Japan's "Living National Treasures" known for his work in saving and reinterpreting the Katazome stencil dyeing technique. If you would like to try your hand at stencil dyeing here are the instructions for making the paste.
