The Sydney Opera House

That most famous of Australian buildings, the Opera House in Sydney Harbour, is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Plaugued by controversy, the architect Jørn Utzon walked off the project after the then government stopped payments to him and the project was opened in 1973, late and over budget. Now it is one of the best-loved buildings in the country and recognisable worldwide for its sails which float over the harbour. Although I have seen it at a distance, I have not been in yet; that pleasure is for another trip although the website gives us glimpses of what is going on through some mini-videos. So, happy birthday Sydney Opera House. Here's to a fantastic celebration!
