Carpets for rivers

The wayward Mississippi has been calmed in this short film from 1939 by British Pathe News.

Wooden carpets woven of willow were made - 1000 feet long - and placed along the banks of the river. They were weighted down with rocks and the fortifications prevented the river from eating away at its banks, preventing flooding. The Mighty Mississippi, tamed!
