Art in a time of War

Have you seen the documentary on iPlayer about Verdi's Requiem and the prisoners of war who sang it in an internment camp?

Hard to watch, but a beautiful piece of poignant film-making, the documentary shows the power of music and art that Jewish prisoners used to escape their surroundings and the daily horrors they faced, using this powerful piece to defy their captors. This film follows the story of a recreation of a performance of Verdi's Requiem which was originally sung during those dark days, driven by one man who believed in the power of music. The film is full of anger, sadness, horror and desolation; it is not easy to watch but although iPlayer is not available to everyone outside the UK, if you can, see this documentary.
