Philip Miller's Influenza 1918
The South African composer Reuben T. Caluza wrote Influenza (1918) when the epidemic reached South Africa. Now composer Philip Miller, possibly best known for collaborations with William Kentridge including Paper Music, has revisited the original recording of the piece. in this arrangement for voices and brass, Philip is trying to raise money for the singers he works with who are in lockdown in South Africa. With theatres, concert halls, recording studios and rehearsal rooms closed and audiences banned these vocalists now have no way of making an income, so they have recorded the song on their mobile 'phones and it has been edited to make a poignant piece.
Have a listen to the piece and then, if you can, please donate via this link. Even a little bit of money will help these musicians and keep them singing for us a while yet.
