Indigo in Peru

The history of textile dyeing is fascinating, and none more so than indigo.

Given the workshop that is coming up in a few weeks at the studio, Shibori dyeing with Cathy Moon, our interest was piqued by an article from 2016 which claims that indigo dyeing in Peru was happening 6,000 years ago. Long before Egyptians or Chinese artisans were using the dye, the coastal people of Peru's north were creating cloth with blue stripes. As indigo dyeing is a complex process this is surprising and, if true, pushes back the history of using the colour by more than a thousand years!
