Pasifika Festival
For thirty years the Pasifika Festival has delighted and educated audiences about culture, style, music and food from across Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa/ the Pacific Ocean.
The largest water mass on Earth, the Pacific Ocean is home to the island groups of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. These islands are the home of hundreds of languages and diverse cultural practices, including music, textiles and art. Next year in March the Pasifika Festival is going to be in Auckland, a celebration with 10 Pacific Island nations sharing their knowledge and unique style. You can read more about the Festival here.
In previous years fashion has had a high profile at this event. While the last time fashion was celebrated at the festival - "Style Pasifika" - was in 2011 at the Rugby World Cup. Since then though another showcase for designers across the region has been on the go. Pacific Fusion Fashion Show started in 2016 and aims to highlight people working in fashion, giving them a helping hand into the industry. Although there was a show this year, the website has not been updated yet with photographs but you can still see what has been happening on the website here. Here is hoping that next year it is on again and we are able to get to see it!
