Henry Cyril Paget, the 5th Marquis of Anglesey
In 1905, the fifth Marquis of Anglesey died from pneumonia brought on by tuberculosis. It ended a life of extravagance, showmanship and a love for costume!
Henry Cyril Paget was known as "eccentric" in his lifetime, but, in spite of his penchant for perfume, a beribboned pet poodle, and dancing - one of his nicknames was "The Dancing Marquess" - Henry was warmly regarded by the public for his generosity and his theatrical exploits. Who couldn't help but like someone who "preferred Scotch tweed" to "peacock-blue plush... a diamond and sapphire tiara, a turquoise dog-collar, ropes of pearls and slippers studded with Burma rubies", and apologised for not appearing in the latter for an interview!
You can read more about the 5th Marquis here and here, and see him in costume on the National Portrait Gallery website. Fabulous!
