Ochre find in Mexico

Ochre has been a pigment for artists for millennia, and now archaeologists have uncovered the oldest worked mines in the Americas. 

These now-flooded caves were worked between 10 and 12,000 years ago and reveal that people used torches to penetrate the system in a search for the mineral. If you would like to read the paper about the discovery, you can do so here
