Basket-making with Lois Walpole
Lois Walpole, the basket-maker, has been visiting us in the studio this past week and showed me an interesting piece of crafting history.
Our collection of Crafts magazines in the library goes back a little way now, and Lois pulled out an article from the early 1980's in which she features as a young basket-maker. A beautiful photograph of her work accompanies the piece; baskets that we would happily own, painted and woven from recycled material.
Lois is running a twining workshop using recycled materials in Unst in February - Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th, in the Baltasound Hall from 10am to 4pm. The technique of twining is used to make kishies, the Shetland oat straw basket and is well suited to any materials that are pliable, soft or fine, so this workshop will appeal to anyone interested in textiles as well as basket-making.
