The Last Kai

The Last Kai

Mother and daughter Aotearoa New Zealand-based Tongan duo, Sulieti Fieme’a Burrows and Tui Emma Gillies, have created a rather marvellous version of The Last Supper.

At almost five metres long and  two-and-a-half metres wide, The Last Kai reinterprets this most famous of paintings onto feta’aki/ tapa cloth. The piece features brightly clothed women, some in face masks, surrounded by traditional patterns on the borders and floor of the painting. These were done with stencils handed down by elders in Falevai where the art of making tapa has been reintroduced after decades of being lost.
