Knitting and spinning workshops
The island of Unst, in the far, romantic north of Shetland, is famous for its beautiful lace knitting, and the Unst Heritage Centre has a wonderful collection of the fine textiles on display and tucked away in their reference only collection. Now, there is a fantastic opportunity to learn from the experts how to create these lovely patterns and textures for yourself with workshops this summer.
Beginners and others are welcome to come to a spinning class on 18th June, while knitters can make shell or cockleshell scarves on the 4th July, or, for very experienced knitters, design your very own Unst Lace Scarf on 5th August. To finish the classes, the 17th September will be a lace knit scarf session, recreating one of the special pieces that made the islands famous.
I think the prices are very reasonable, and include tops or yarn, instructions, tuition, finishing and dressing plus the use of equipment. There is also tea and coffee available.
