Patterns from Nature

Science meets art in a beautiful book: Art-Studies from Nature, as Applied to Design.

Published in London in 1872, the book is a collection of four essays, one from each of artist, lecturer and amateur botanist F E Hulme,  Geologist S J Mackie, Mineralogist Robert Hunt and meteorologist James Glashier. Plants, seaweeds, snow and organic remains all become grist to the mills of these luminaries as they write about architecture, design and manufacture. Best of all, there are beautiful images; woodcuts to illustrate the texts.

In this day and age books like these are freely available online. Have a look at Project Gutenberg for this one, and many others too.
