Flour sack clothes

During the Great Depression in the USA people started to make clothing out of flour sacks through sheer necessity.

Apparently when it came to the attention of the flour company owners they started to print the sacks with patterns and colours so that they were more attractive. This meant that not only clothes but also furnishings and the like could be made to match! Once the clothes were worn out then the fabrics were cut up to make quilts; recycling in umpteen different ways.

Have a look at this website for some pictures and explanations of the clothes that people wore, made from these sacks, and this link to see more pictures on Pinterest.
