Merrill Comeau is an American artist who uses textiles to explore memory, redemption and women's experiences.
Using various techniques including composting, to create her pieces, Merrill explores identity and memory in really interesting ways. I partiularly like the floor cloth which lays out Merrill's childhood bedroom plans on stitched fabric. Isn't it interesting how different people can take traditional crafts and create something contemporary and striking. You can see more of the work on TextileArtist.org's website here.
The history of the floor cloth is extensive. People have long covered the floors of their houses and buildings with decorated textiles and in 17th Century France, old sails were given a second life in this way. If you fancy trying your hand at making your own their are various tutorials on the Interweb, like this one from Mother Earth News.
