Fair Isle on the BBC

Fair Isle has given its name to the colour-filled jumpers which are known the world over. 50 year old photographs bring their past to life.

Chris Morphet travelled to the island in 1970 to capture images of the knitwear. Now you can see them on the BBC.

The last photograph in the article is interesting for a different reason. It shows two young girls in the foreground wearing very smart tweed! If these are Shetland tweeds then the photograph is even more important. The tweed industry in the isles by the seventies was in serious decline. The picture could be a glimpse of this almost forgotten heritage.
