A song and dance in the North
We were very lucky to have a dance session in Cullivoe today (the link is to the Cullivoe Up Helly Aa which happens next month), with John Morris. The dance session was part of Ignition, a Shetland Arts and National Theatre of Scotland joint project, and we had a lot of fun making up movement and dance sequences based on the actions that we make in cars, changing gear, slamming doors and the like.
Dance is really good for me as a singer. It encourages me to think about movement for songs, and about the way that sound is produced when I use my whole body rather than just my chest.
John came to Yell early so that we could go to the local care centre in Mid Yell, Isleshavn. We sang and danced for the folk in the centre, and learned a whole lot about Shetland as it used to be from one of the people in the centre. All in all, is has been a very satisfying and very good day. Thanks everyone!
