Cullivoe Up Helly Aa 2015
This weekend is Cullivoe Up Helly Aa, the annual fire-festival.
The procession is the most spectaculr part of the festival and on a breezy and cold night we braved the elements to go and see it. Fire, Vikings and guizers. What more could want from the end of a Shetland winter!
Cullivoe Up Helly Aa is our local event and the procession starts at the Hall with the lighting of the torches. The guizers line up and march down the hill following a galley which has been built specially for the event, everyone singing and yelling, to the harbour where the ship is floated and burned as flaming torches are hurled into it. It is spectacular, and only the beginning of the weekend of celebration. After this procession all the guizers perform skits and plays based on what has happened over the year, from minor misdemeanours to major events. And all in good fun!
Here are some pictures of UHA 2015 in Cullivoe. One day maybe you can visit us to see it?
