The impact of colonialism on the material cultures of the African diaspora

The material cultures of Africa were hugely affected by colonialism, and those effects rewrought the world. 

This week, as part of the British Textile Biennial, a Cloth Connections discussion was held with Cheyney McKnight, the founder of Not Your Momma’s History and Elli Michaela Young, a PhD student who is exploring the links between West Indian Sea Island Cotton and the North of England. This fascinating presentation and conversation illuminates and explores a problematic time when exploitation went hand-in-hand with trade and commerce.
