Christchurch and Upton Chapel

Christchurch in Lambeth was a late 19th Century church that was severely damaged by bombing in the Second World War. The Upton Chapel was also damaged in the war and finally demolished in 1952.

Combining the two into what remained of Christchurch, - the Lincoln Spire, so-called because it was built with US donations to Lambeth's support for the Union in the Civil War - resulted in this beautiful building with a facade made of concrete resembling drapery and weave writ-large!
