The sound of summer - bees buzzing in the flowers. Just a nice noise? The scientists don't think so...

Different species of bee buzz in different ways. Perhaps that is not so startling but did you know that some of them buzz differently when they are angry to the way they buzz when dislodging pollen from flower stamens? Tests by Paul De Luca from Ithaca College in New York prove the difference is marked in pitch and duration, and that it varies between species of bee. The story, from the Economist magazine, ends with the point that bees perhaps could manage a simple tune, hence the title of this blog entry.
