Here is an interesting piece about Asafo flags from what is now Ghana.
Originally markers of military alliances with the Fante people, these flags continue to be made nowadays and celebrated by dance and music. The flags can be seen in museums across the globe but it is through use that true respect for the cloths is shown; by flying, using and parading the flags messages are given. A whole people's identity is wrapped up in these symbols and to hear Gus Casely-Hayford speak about them is really rather wonderful.
