Article of the week - Number Nine
Rose by Lara Carter was added to the collection a few years ago, bought on a whim from an auction. When the piece arrived it was immediately clear that it was significant.
Lara's work is also in the Constance Howard Gallery at Goldsmith's College in London.Pieced from cotton, organzas and silk, the patchwork is free-machine stitched and quilted. Correspondence subsequently with Lara, having tracked the artist down, revealed that it was made in the 1990s and was part of a collection for BP, the oil company. Quite how it came to be sold at auction is a mystery.
The piece is in need of some restoration and is currently in storage at the studio.
