Article of the Week - number seventeen

Diane Garrick created this piece for her final show on graduating from Shetland College a few years ago.Now on loan to the studio, the piece hangs above the front door and you will have seen it if you have visited.

Diane explored the history of sailmaking in Shetland through photographs, documents and other archive sources. The art piece was created and printed onto sail canvas, and stitched with a curved needle, one of the "revatwiries" in the quoted text. All the text is in Shetland dialect (translation can be provided if you would like. Please email.). It is a lovely evocation of a time when Shetland's harbours and bays were filled with sailboats; the buzz in the islands must have been quite something in the fishing season.
