Article of the Week - number fifteen

Harakeke is the Maori name for the New Zealand flax, familiar to us from gardens around the world. In this piece, Tim Main has created a repeating pattern using a richly coloured and detailed picture of the flax leaves and flowers, screenprinted onto cotton in 2011. The piece, pictured in situ and in closeup on this page,  was added to the collection in 2012.

Tim's interest in the Arts and Crafts Movement is evident in his work, as is his interest in pattern. He has collaborated with carpet-makers Dilana as well as creating sculpture, all inspired by the flora of New Zealand. You can read more about Tim here.
