A Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you have all had a wonderful festive season. Welcome to the first blog entry for 2013.

Our own start to the New Year was full of light and colour, music and beautiful fabrics, courtesy of the film, The Colour of Pomegranates. This wonderful work comes from the Armenian director, Sergei Parajanov, and tells the life story of Sayat Nova - Master of Songs, through a series of tableaux. Sayat Nova was a poet, a folk singer and songwriter born in Tbilisi in the 18th Century, and the film creates an impression of his life and thoughts through extremely evocative, stylised shots. For some stills, have a look at this website...http://visualmelt.com/The-Color-of-Pomegranates.

A few years ago, we spent Christmas in Istanbul, where we saw the most amazing fabrics. This film is full of similar colours and textures, textiles galore! We spent many happy hours looking at the cloths in the bazaar and found inspiration in the tiles and fabrics in the museums, bazaars and parks of the city. The film brought those lovely memories back.

Sadly, the soundtrack to the film is not easily available but listen to this piece and see what you think. Personally, I think this is incredible music, full of history, longing and wonder. If anyone does find where I can buy the music from the film, please let me know and I will pass on the information.
