IslandSongs 2012

In these days of economic gloom and uncertainty, music is something that brings people together and gives us all a real reason to feel happier, never more so than at our annual IslandSongs event. This is a unique "performance in a weekend" session where a group of people get together for the two days and with expert guidance produce a piece which is performed to the public on a Sunday afternoon. Â Each year, we bring Lin Marsh and Wendy Cook to Shetland to lead the session and each year we have a lot of fun and hard work, and learn some truly wonderful things about music, singing, performance and each other.

This year, we have a mix of ages and nationalities taking part. Our weaver in residence is on the course, Kirsty Harris from an Irish opera company is with us, and the age range is 6 to 74!

We could not do this kind of thing without our volunteers and I would like to thank especially Maggie Bowler who makes tea and coffee in unending quantities, keeps the event running smoothly and sorts out any minor crises, Alison Martin who has helped set up IslandSongs, and all the contributors to the event. Without you, we could not succeed and you truly keep the spirit of community alive. Now for the concert!
