Castanets forever?

That unique sound of flamenco, the click of the castanet, is in danger of dying out.

One of the last makers of the instrument, Juan Vela, tells of his passion in this short clip from the BBC, accompanied by some fantastic dancing and playing..

A favourite poem which I learned at school "Tarantella" by Hillaire Belloc speaks of "the snapping of the clapper to the spin, out and in", a perfect evocation of the sounds of the wooden castanets. Wouldn't the world be a slightly sadder place without this?
